Unmanning

"What is once well done is done forever."
What is done egregiously is done continuously.
So smelting the gold piles, the slick coating
of assumption we slide down so quickly
we barely notice the oil. I stand up greasy
and say, "Such is life," shower and toss
out my clothes. Somewhere there is a goodness,
unspoken, unheard of, not solely a gesture,
a complete doing that is so out of whack
with humanity it would be labeled inhuman, held up
for display so our children learn never, never to do
such a deed unheralded, unsanctioned, that hits
at the core of living so hard it can threaten
goodness by illuminating the ferocity of its need.
